So…um, where’d the blog go?

Hi, everybody! Doug, here. If you are the type of person to pay attention to this sort of thing, and why wouldn’t you be, Fair Reader, you might have noticed that the library blog’s last entry was over a month ago. What’s going on?

What happened is that the wonderful Sheeji Kathuria, who had kept up the blog for some time, accepted a job offer to become Mississippi State University’s Social Science Librarian. In her absence, I’ll be stepping in to make some posts about the goings on around the library and the campus. The first entry will be next Monday, as I start a new series taking a look at some of the clubs, organizations, and people who keep our campus vibrant. I will also try to add in blogs taking a more in-depth approach about the resources the library offers. There will also be blog entries covering events and people around the library, as usual.

Before I go, though, just want to take a moment to say: Congrats, Sheeji, and thanks for your work on the blog and with all the things you’ve done around here!

See you next week.

Salmon Library’s Belinda Ong to receive ISC, U.S. Department of State Spirit of Diplomacy Award

Dr. Belinda Ong, Director of Reference and Information Services at UAH’s M. Louis Salmon Library, will be honored on October 22nd with the International Services Council (ISC) of Alabama’s 2013 Spirit of Diplomacy Award.  ISC is sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of State.

Dr. Ong will receive the award during a luncheon ceremony in Birmingham. She is being recognized for her work as president of the International Society of Huntsville (ISH). Ong is a key charter member and co-founder of the organization. She was instrumental in planning the organization’s annual International Festival of North Alabama, recently hosted on the UAH campus.  In her position as director of Reference and Information Services at the university library, Ong works with many international students and actively promotes all students working together to find commonalities and to form friendships and understanding.

Way to go Belinda!

New study spaces at Salmon Library

We recently put in some new furniture on the 1st floor of Salmon Library.  Called “media:scapes,” these unique pieces of furniture provide large, somewhat private group seating as well as double monitors that easily lend to displaying and sharing your work.

Here’s a diagram of how you can get to them when you’re inside the library:

Salmon Library Parking Lot CLOSING

Important announcement:  As part of continued construction of the campus greenway, the Salmon Library parking lot will be permanently closing. Construction will start on the crosswalk at Holmes Avenue, Monday, October 14th.  As a result of this work, the parking lot with access from Holmes Avenue will be closed effective October 13, 2013.  This lot will be removed shortly thereafter, but work on Holmes Avenue itself necessitates closure of the access.

The parking lot closer to the Nursing Building will still be open, with entrance to it coming from Ben Graves drive, not Holmes Avenue.  Library patrons may find alternate parking at the Intermodal Facility lots located at University Fitness Center, Spragins Hall, and Wilson Hall/Business Administration Building.
