New at the Library in 2011

It’s going to be an exciting academic year of change at the UAHuntsville Library in the 2011 – 2012 academic year.  We have a number of new features and resources this year, some which are already here and some that are coming soon.

New furniture, workspaces, and improved study rooms are coming to the library in October.

We hope to have this all installed in the building during Fall Break, and are planning an Open House the week of Homecoming at UAHuntsville.  More information will be coming, but we plan on having a free concert in the building or just outside with local Indie Folk / Acoustic band Ashlyn Maine.

Read more about our new furniture at our earlier blog post, and become a fan of Ashlyn Maine on their Facebook page.

2nd Annual International Festival on Sat., Oct. 29

We are pleased to announce that the International Society of Huntsville in conjunction with the University of Alabama in Huntsville will be hosting the 2nd Annual International Festival on Saturday, October 29th from 10 am – 3 pm at the UAHuntsville Shelby Center Atrium and Courtyard.  Admission is free and food (served from 11:30-2) is only $5 per person.  There will be performances and country displays.

The 1st Annual International Festival was a huge success last year. Below are pictures from last year’s festival.

Congrats to Dr. Sam Thomas on new book!

UAHuntsville history professor Samuel S. Thomas has written about the history of midwifery for historical journals, and in the coming year he will explore the subject in fiction as well.

The book, a work of historical fiction, is tentatively titled The Midwife’s Story: A Mystery and will be published next fall by St. Martin’s Press. Thomas’s book tells the story of Bridget Hodgson, an elite midwife in 17th century York, England. While Hodgson is a gentlewoman by birth, and thus is close to the most powerful families of York, her work as a midwife takes her far beyond her elite social circle.

You can read more about how Dr. Thomas discovered Bridget Hodgson here.

UAHuntsville students and faculty can read some of Dr. Thomas’s other works listed below online or download the full-text from various databases, courtesy of the Salmon library. If you need any assistance locating the articles, please contact the library at 256-824-6529 or http://libanswers.uah.edu.

Statistical Datasets

From now until Aug. 29, the UAHuntsville Salmon Library (and other NAAL members) will have trial access to the ProQuest database DataSets, described by ProQuest as “The World’s Largest Collection of Organized Statistical Data.” Please contact the Reference Desk for login information at 256-824-6529 or http://libanswers.uah.edu.

ProQuest Statistical DataSets is a Web-based research solutions tool that provides fast and easy access to 15 billion data points from licensed and public domain datasets within an easy-to-use interface. With this dynamic new product, you can scan the contents of over 580 datasets, select subjects and variables of interest, and view your data in side-by-side tables and charts.

DataSets addresses an emerging emphasis on quantitative literacy, fostering critical skills in the use, manipulation, and interpretation of numeric data. Results are customizable and instantaneous, with indicators arranged in folders by topic and source. Users can tap “live” statistics that are much more current than what is published, plus local data, time series typically extending back an average span of 34 years, and necessary bibliographic/citation information.

PREMIUM MODULES:
Easy Analytic Software Inc. (EASI), a leading statistical modeling firm that specializes in consumer demographics, is now available as a premium subscription module within LexisNexis Statistical DataSets which provides data on consumer demographics and usage/spending patterns for products and services within all States, counties, census tracts, and block groups in the US. The data can be mapped, graphed, and analyzed using all the interactive tools available in Statistical DataSets. Data sources include Mediamark’s annual Survey of the American Consumer, BLS’s Consumer Expenditure Survey, Census 2000, the American Community Survey, and the Census of Retail Trade.

Sub-national data—by Chinese Province, county, and municipality—is available as a premium subscription to Statistical DataSets.
