Library Guide to Electronic and Traditional Books
How to Access Electronic and Traditional Books from the UAH Library

Electronic Books

You may access over 20,000 e-books via UAH's netLibrary electronic book collection. You can access netLibrary by simply clicking on the "Electronic Books" icon to the left. However, if you have not used the netLibrary database before, you might wish to take a few minutes to read the information on this page and in netLibrary's eBook QuickStart Guide.

To get started wtih netLibrary, you will first have to create a user account.

Creating a user account:

We are unable to send you E-Books via email or in a paper format. You must access E-Books online. You can either browse or read the E-Books online. You may also choose to create a virtual library shelf where you can place your favorite books. (See the
"eBookshelf" instructions on the netLibrary site.) We strongy recommend that you take the time to read netLibrary's eBook Quickstart Guide. Doing so can save you much time and frustration. You may also wish to read the other information contained within the "Learn More About eBooks" section of the netLibrary home page.

Traditional Books

1. From the UAH collection

To access the UAH Library Catalog:

In addition to traditional books, the catalog also includes e-book listings. If the book indicates that the location is “internet” that means it’s an e-book and available to you instantly online in netLibrary. See e-book instructions above.

Traditional, hard-bound, "real" books that UAH owns and are located physically in the collection can NOT be sent via email or made available to you electronically for download. However, you may request that we ship them to you.

2. To request that we send a book to you

Shipping. We usually ship via UPS with a signature required. You may choose to have your book(s) delivered to your home or your place of business... whichever is easier for obtaining a signature on delivery…UPS will not leave a package without a signature.

Shipping Period. How long does it take for UAH books to be shipped to me? For UAH books, we try to ship them via UPS Ground the same day we receive your written request…presuming the book is not checked out to another patron.

Notes. Federal Copyright law prohibits us from taking book, article, or reserve requests over the phone.

All requests must be submitted in writing via the request form or via email to capella@email.uah.edu.

3. Book Loan Periods

Books which belong to UAH can be checked out for 90 days, with a possible 90 day renewal. Interlibrary Loan Books, which belong to another library, can only be checked out for the time period indicated by the lending library, usually 21 days. We can’t control the due date for items which belong to other libraries, and must abide by their assigned due dates. Returning ILL books on time helps us to maintain the valuable relationships with the lenders in our lending system.

4. Overdue Fines

Overdue fines accrue at the rate of 25 cents per item per day for UAH Books and one dollar a day per day for ILL Books. After 28 days the book is declared ”Lost”, and a fine of $65 is imposed. Once a “Lost” book is returned, the $65 fine is dropped, but you are still responsible for the overdue fine. Failure to pay overdue fines will result in a loss of your privileges.

5. Local Libraries versus the UAH Library

Do not overlook a valuable resource: your local libraries! If you have access to one or more libraries in your area, take advantage of their services. You may find that using a local library is more efficient, simply due to the distance from Huntsville, AL to your home. This is especially true if you are ordering BOOKS, which are shipped via UPS.

6. Cost

Strayer learners are responsible for the shipping cost to RETURN borrowed books to the UAH Library in Huntsville, AL. This, and any overdue fines/lost book fines you might incur, is the only cost involved when using the UAH Library. Articles sent to you are yours to keep for free.
