    Made available by netLibrary, check out new electronic books in art.
  • Getty Provenance Index
    The Getty Provenance Index accumulates and disseminates information related to the history of collecting, and to the provenance of individual works of art. Sales catalogues, archival records, and museum files reveal the history of ownership of works of art, and provide information about the history of taste and collecting.

  • Smithsonian Institution Online Collections
    The Smithsonian, the largest museum complex in the world, is providing digital access to the collections, which consists of art and artifacts.  It is possible to search Smithsonian Institution Online Collections for particular works of art by identifying artist, date, museum department, and by keyword from the text.

  • Index of American Design
    The Index of American Design, created by the National Gallery of Art, is an archive consisting of approximately 17,000 watercolor renderings produced from 1935 to 1942. These images record American decorative arts objects from the colonial period through the nineteenth century. Organized by tours of selected subject areas such as pottery, costume, and textiles, this visual index provides information about American material culture and the desire to document this culture.


 

Textbook and Course Related Websites

  • Gateway to Art History
    Compiled for use with Gardner's Art Through the Ages, this companion site is organized to match the chapter headings in the textbook. Related essays with images augment the textbook presentation. Click on the section or chapter headings to view links in that area.

  • Perseus Project
    The Perseus Project is a searchable database of information concerning the ancient Greek world. Developed by Editor-in-Chief Gregory Crane, Professor of Classics at Tufts University, this digital library contains texts, images of vases, sculptures, coins, and architecture, and reference materials (atlas, encyclopedia, Greek-English lexicon). Keyword searches in English or Greek are possible!

  • Internet Ancient History Sourcebooks: Rome
    Internet History Sourcebooks are collections of public domain and copy-permitted translations of historical texts presented for educational use. Developed by Paul Halsall, Fordham University, the Rome site can be used as a source for primary textual sources and for an overview of events in Roman history. Links to images can be found under the heading Art and Architecture.

  • Victorian Web
    Created at Brown University as a resource for Victorian literature, the searchable Victorian Web reflects an interdisciplinary approach to the study of a particular period in time. Find information on the arts in Victorian Britain, including Victorian iconography, and Ruskin's aesthetic and critical theories.


Thesaurus and Dictionary Sites

  • The Art & Architecture Thesaurus Browser
    Developed by the Getty Information Institute, the AAT is a comprehensive vocabulary of nearly 120,000 terms for describing objects, textural materials, images, architecture, and material culture from antiquity to the present. In addition to gaining an accurate definition, the hierarchical display of terms places the definition in its context of related terms.

  • The Union List of Artist Names Browser
    Created by the Getty Research Institute as a structured vocabulary tool, the Union List of Artist Names can be used to obtain the preferred form of an artist's name. Bibliographical citations follow the artist's name, and, like Thieme-Becker, can be used to find more sources relating to the artist.

  • ArtLex
    ArtLex began as the effort of an art instructor to create a lexicon of art terms. Now affiliated with Barnes and Noble, the project has grown into a glossary of 1400 articles and includes images.


Artists

  • AskART.com
    More than just a searchable database for names of artists, AskART offers a selection of information including artist profiles, an image gallery, auction records, biographies of artists, book and periodical references on artists, dealers for a given artist, and museums holding artists' works.

  • Artist-Info: Contemporary Art Database
    Artist-Info supplies information on contemporary art exhibitions. The site is searchable by the name of the artist or by gallery.


 

Museums and Galleries

  • Art Guide: The Art Lover's Guide to Britain and Ireland
    Organized by museum, by artist, and geographically, the Art Guide includes maps, addresses, and telephones for museums and galleries in Britain and Ireland. The list of artists are linked to the corresponding museum, allowing the searcher to locate the strengths of a collection for a particular area in art. No images of art are at this site.

  • National Gallery of Art
    The National Gallery of Art houses an art collection representative of the medieval period to the present. The collection of images is searchable by artist, title, or subject. In-depth studies of artists and their work can be found at this site.

  • National Museum of American Art
    The National Museum of American Art is the home of the largest collection of American art in the world. Browse the collection of over 3000 digitized images by searching for a particular artist, or choose from a subject list that includes photography, architecture, abstracts, and more.

  • Tate Gallery
    The Tate Gallery houses the national collection of British art from the sixteenth century to the present day. Browse the 8000 image collection by choosing from an alphabetical list of artists.

  • The USC Interactive Art Museum at the Fisher Gallery
    The University of Southern California museum site guides the viewer through the collections selected for electronic format. The selections include landscapes by American artists, and J.M.W. Turner's illustrations to the British poets. Background information is presented with the images.


 

Images

  • Art Images for College Teaching
    Art Images for College Teaching (AICT) is dedicated to the principle of free exchange of image resources for and among members of the educational community. Organized chronologically, the site contains images pertaining to the ancient world, to the medieval era, to renaissance and baroque, 18th-20th century, and non-western art. Images can be downloaded for educational purposes.

  • Artchive
    Virtual curator Mark Harden maintains this site containing images for educational or personal use. Artists are listed alphabetically, so just click on artist's name to link to images. Current exhibits in galleries are also listed.

  • World Art Treasures
    The Jacques-Edouard Berger Foundation shares 100,000 slides devoted to art. Each group of images contains information about the artist and period.

  • Maecenas: Images of Ancient Greece and Rome
    Unrestricted (except for commercial use) collection of photographs from the personal collection of Leo C. Curran, Professor Emeritas of Classics, University of Buffalo. Images of Rome, Sicily, and areas of France are included. Pompeii is well represented with architectural images, such as paintings from the House of Ara Massima.

  • Digital Imaging Project
    Images of European and North American architecture and sculpture are indexed by art historical sites, by artists and architects, or chronologically.

  • WebMuseum Network
    The WebMuseum is the generous effort of Nicholas Pioch, Ecole Polytechnique, to provide quality images on the Web. The Famous Paintings exhibition has an artist index, a glossary, and a themes (style period) index.

    Voice of the Shuttle is the web page for electronic research in the Humanities. The Art & Art History section contains links to museums, galleries, artists, art theory, journals & zines, conferences and calls for papers, teaching resources and more.

    Maintained by Dr. Christopher Witcombe, Professor of Art History at Sweet Briar College, this site contains links to divisions in art history by style or time period, research resources, museums and galleries, and prints and photography.
