Problems Accessing the Server? | Issues With Firewalls | Issues With Cookies
You will not be required to log on to the Online Library until you actually attempt to access one of the online resources. Each session, the first time you attempt to access an online resource, you will be routed to the log on page and prompted to log on to the Online Library. Once you have successfully logged on, your browser will then automatically route you to the online resource that you wish to access.
To access certain library resources, you must log on. If you are entering the library system from AU's Blackboard you are already logged into the library. However, if you've come directly to the library homepage you'll have to log into the proxy server: The first time you click on one of the electronic resources (E-books or a journal database), you'll be asked to log in.
Once you have been routed to the log in page:
- Enter your last name in all lower case letters in the upper box.
- Enter your AU ID in the lower box.
students: The AU ID format is five or more digits prefaced by the letters "AU"
Example ID: RU39265
If you need help with your last name and AU ID, please enter your e-mail address below and the system will send them to you immediately!
Questions about your ID? Send an email to amridge@email.uah.edu Subject: AU ID problem. Include your full name and any ID you have been issued by AU. Include your mailing address, an email address and phone number(s).
- Click on “Log-in To Online Library” to complete the log in process. Once you have successfully logged in, your browser will automatically route you on to the online resource you wish to access.
NOTE: You will only be prompted to log in once you attempt to access materials from the online resources.

Problems Accessing the Proxy Server?
If you have problems accessing the proxy server, please follow these steps to eliminate the problem:
1. First let's make sure our system detects you as coming from off-campus. Right now it appears you are coming from off-campus. If this is not true, please email AU Library Services, (amridge@email.uah.edu) or use the online Contact Us form, which ever is easier.
2. Next let's see if you have cookies turned on. Ignore the window that appears after the first click; the first window is normally incorrect. The second time you click the above link, you should see a green window pop up indicating that your cookies are turned on. If you get a red window indicating that your cookies are off, you will need to turn them on. (See below for how to turn on cookies.) If you see a red window and believe it is a mistake, click on the link again to be sure.
3. Make sure you are typing in the correct information. Your last name and AU ID should be in lowercase. Also, remember that AU Student IDs come in two formats (see examples above.) Still can't get in? Contact us at amridge @email.uah.edu.
Note to AOL customers: It is recommended that you use Netscape or Internet Explorer browsers when accessing these databases. To do this, login to AOL, minimize the AOL software, then launch Netscape or Internet Explorer.
When reporting a problem, please give us your username, and your browser and version number, and the name of the resource you were unable to access (ie, EBSCOhost).

Issues with Firewalls and the Proxy Server
- Most ISPs do not limit the areas their users can access on the Internet, so home users do not tend to encounter problems with firewalls. However, corporate sites often employ firewalls and may be highly restrictive in what their employees can access. Your corporate site may be willing to open access through their firewall to the proxy server by allowing connections to ports 6048-2448. You must have access to all of these port numbers from the proxy server to work. Also, if you are running a personal firewall application or similar product on your computer (i.e., Norton Personal Firewall, McAfee.com Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, BlackICE Defender, etc.) you will also need to modify the default settings to allow connections to these ports.
- Issues with Cookies and the Proxy Server
- Access to licensed electronic databases is available to current AU students, faculty, and staff. To verify your access while you are accessing these databases, the Library requires that your web browser accept cookies. Please click here TWICE to see if you have cookies turned on (a new window will open. You will have to do it twice. It usually doesn't work the first time.) The procedure to enable the cookies option in your Web browser depends on the browser you are using. The instructions below describe how to find the correct Help screen for enabling cookies on Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and Netscape Navigator 4.x. (NOTE: we do not recommend using Netscape Navigator 6.x.)
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- Click the Help menu option at the top of the Internet Explorer (IE) window.
- Select the Contents and Index option. The Microsoft Internet Explorer Help window will open.
- Be sure the Index or Search tab is the active tab.
- In the search box just under "Type the keyword to find:," type cookies and press the ENTER key. On the right-hand side of the help window, information about cookies will be displayed.
- Read the information about cookies, then at the bottom of the text click on the link, Set a security level for each zone.
- Follow the instructions that are displayed.
- Exit Internet Explorer.
- Start Internet Explorer as you normally do. It is now set to accept cookies.
Netscape Navigator 4.x
- Click the Help menu option at the top of the Navigator window.
- Select the Help Contents option. The Nethelp - Netscape window will open at the upper left of your screen.
- Click the Index radio button.
- In the search box just under" Look for:," type cookies and press the ENTER key.
- Click on the keyword, "cookies" that appears directly under the search box.
- Click on "Handling Cookies" and follow the instructions that are displayed.
- Exit Navigator.
- Start Navigator as you normally do. It is now set to accept cookies.
